Octospora gyalectoides Svrček & Kubička
Ceská Mykol. 17(2): 66 (1963)

Type: Czech Republic, 'Smržov prope Lomnice n. Luž. (Bohemia merid.), in agro supra piscinam Dvořišě ad parietem fossae', 1961-Jun-18, L. Kubičková (holotype PRM)
Synonyms: show
Octospora gyalectoides, apothecia Octospora gyalectoides, ascus with ascospores
1: Octospora gyalectoides agg. (Pottia intermedia), apothecia with Pottia intermedia 2: Octospora gyalectoides agg. (Pottia intermedia), ascus with ascospores
Apothecia (0,5)1 - 2 mm, orange, without a conspicious margin, growing on soil or directly on the host moss
Asci: with 8 spores in one row
Spores: ellipsoid to small ellipsoid often on one side or both fusiform, (15)17-22(23) x 9-13 µm, smooth, with one large oil droplet
Hosts: Phascum cuspidatum (=Tortula acaulon) in the type specimen, reports on other hosts possibly represent different taxa: reported from Aloina, Barbula, Hennediella, Phascum, Pottia, Pterygoneurum, Tortella, Tortula, rarely also from Bryum (Bryaceae)
Infectious structures: infects always stem and leaf cells not the rhizoids
Habitat: open soil together with pioneer mosses, preferring base-poor sites
Distribution:  (all hosts included) Austria, Czech Republic (Janošík unpublished), France, Germany (widespread and common, BE, BB, HH, MV, NS, RP, SA, AN, TH), Greenland (Dissing 1982), Hungary, Italy (Janošík unpublished), Slovakia (Janošík unpublished), Spain, Sweden (Isaksson 2022), United Kingdom
Notes: The unusually broad host spectrum indicates a complex taxon. The name is used as a 'container' for smooth-spored Octospora with uniseriately arranged ascospores. Benkert (2007) reported Pottia spec. as host in the type collection, but a new study revealed Phacum cuspidatum (=Tortula acaulon) as the host. Collections with a host different from Phascum cuspidatum should be named 'O. gyalectoides agg. (host)' until a revision of the complex is carried out. O. crosslandii (Dennis & Itzerott) Benkert on Bryoerythorphyllum recurvirostrum was synonymised with O. gyalectoides by Benkert (2007) but should be regarged as an independent taxon.
